I have always been passionate about understanding evolution, starting from how life started on Earth, how first eukaryotes arose, and how bacteria became organelles, subjects I addressed during my predoctoral and postdoctoral research focusing also on data gathering and methodological aspects. Back home to the Basque Country, I first worked as bioinformatician, mostly analyzing high-throughput sequencing and genotyping data of model organisms such as humans, mouse and fruit fly, and I then moved to the marine environment. For about 12 years, I have been working on the application of genetics for improving marine management.
